Description

What is the course about?

This new tutor led course is designed to offer a more flexible ‘drop in’ way to learn using the facilities of the print-
studio. The class size is capped to enable more space for individual projects than you would expect in a busy class.
You will have access to the print studio and tutor guidance when needed.
Your choice: You may join the whole course (at a discounted price) and either work on personal projects or be
guided through a series of printmaking techniques and small projects,
OR you can pick and choose individual sessions to come along and join with the class or work independently on your own project.
Whole course: book your place via City Lit as usual..
Individual sessions: Bookable and payable via Eventbrite.
Set projects will run in the order below. Individual projects require some understanding and experience in the process you wish to work in. If in doubt contact either the tutor of any class you are currently attending, or myself as course coordinator suebaker.kenton@citylit.ac.uk

Beginners have the option of joining the whole course, but not the option to book individual sessions.

What will we cover?

Set projects:
Weeks 1-3. Monoprint. including trace, multi layers, using the press, stencil and screen.
Tutor: Gareth Berwyn
Weeks 4-6. Intaglio. Including drypoint, grounds, soft and hard, chine-colle etc.
Tutor: Gareth Berwyn
Weeks 7-9. Relief printmaking with lino, mono and colour.
Tutor: Gareth Berwyn
Weeks 9-13. Specialist tutor to support intermediate lithography students
Tutor: Simon Burder.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Gain confidence working independently and safely in the print studio with tutor support when needed.
Take personal projects further and develop your printmaking skills simultaneously.
Gain a basic understanding of a variety of printmaking techniques and small set projects which will inform your future art practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To work independently, we ask that you have some experience in the printmaking process you will be using.
Absolute beginners would be advised to attend one of our beginners courses first, but you are welcome if you have
tried printmaking in the past and wish to refresh your experience.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There are set projects each week which you may, or may not join in with.
1:1 support and tutor guidance is available for all.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are all included. Specialist material for individual projects may need to be purchased by you beforehand.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to go on to more sustained practice for example the one year advanced Citylit printmaking course (VS905/986). Ask your tutor for advice.

General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
