Printmaking editions

What is the course about?

This course is designed to give you an insight into different prints and how they have been made. You will learn why and how an artist (you?) may produce an edition, and what are some of the rules for final presentation of prints within this context. By looking at professional artists prints, close up, you will see examples of printed editions and learn the key additional information (eg edition number/AP etc.)
We will look at the pros and cons of editioning prints, and share tips and tricks to gain professional results.
We will see how professional artists still engage with the process of editioning today, and how digital replication may affect our understanding of an original piece of work.

What will we cover?

The day will be divided into two halves. In the morning session, we will look through prints within Citylit, understanding editioning marks, the proofing process, collecting, framing and print finishing techniques, variable editions, the history of editioning and recognising different print processes such as lithography, inaglio, screenprint, relief, monoprint and giclee.
In the afternoon you will visit The British Museum (or other institution) and visit their archive or exhibition. You will get the opportunity to get up close to prints created by internationally recognised artists, both historical and contemporary. The class will conclude with stimulating conversation in which you apply your learning from the morning session.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Identify print markings and editioning numbers.
• Identify the difference between printmaking processes (screenprint, relief, etching, lithography and giclee).
• Gain insight into print finishing and presenting prints for a professional context.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for all. From total beginners to professional artists, or those with an interest in contemporary prints.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In the morning there will be a discussion and question and answer session. Demonstrations will also play part of the session.
In the afternoon we will visit an art institution where you will be encouraged to offer feedback and demonstrate your learning from the morning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You do not need to bring any specialist equipment. Maybe bring a notepad and if you do have any prints you’d like to discuss, feel free to bring them in.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Visit a print fair and start your own printmaking collection. If you’ve been inspired by some of the prints you have seen, maybe you could join one of the printmaking classes at Citylit.
