What is the course about?

Mixed media is a great way to expand on your imagery, and silkscreen and photo-litho are tools for the job. You will be shown how to create multi-media prints from your own imagery, re-invigorating the image and creating new textures and layers. Photo screen and photo-litho are hugely creative tools and very adaptable for scale and colour. Use them to overlay, to stencil and collage in a vibrant contemporary style.

What will we cover?

- variety of technical skills to generate and manipulate your imagery
- Combine processes including silkscreen and photo-lithography.
- How to incorporate photographic, drawn and painted elements into the work.
- How to develop photo-litho plates and learn how to ink up the work and print them.
- How to prepare art work by scanning and manipulating images on the computer using Adobe Photoshop.
- How to coat the screen with a photo-sensitive emulsion and preparing screens
- Exposure and development of artwork onto the screen
- Adding a wax resist to the screen using a tjanting tool or by painting wax directly onto the screen.
- How to screen print on to paper and other surfaces.
- How to register and over print employing different silk screens.
- Making artwork using different silkscreen methods and images to print in a combination of colours.
Cutting and tearing paper stencils.
- industry standard skills in registration, and overprinting in a combination of colours such as CMYK.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Expose and develop a photo litho plate
- Ink up the plate and print successfully
- Stretch a screen
- Coat the silkscreen with a photo sensitive emulsion
- Make and develop work in Photoshop and print onto acetate
- Make art work in order to expose to onto the silkscreen
- Make stencils and explore different methods to make screen including wax tjanting and painting directly onto the screen with wax
- Print the work using silkscreen and squeegee
- Gain a good understanding of how to register and overprint
- Make artwork using both mediums employing different methods and images to print in a combination of different ways.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels are welcome. The course is suitable for complete beginners and more experienced printmakers who want to try out new ideas. You should be able to follow verbal instructions and follow demonstrations. Basic Photoshop skills and a knowledge of digital photography would be beneficial.

This course is open for all however if you are a complete beginner you may wish to do one of the introductory courses first. More advanced students will be guided to develop personal projects alongside the course material.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration will be given to enable you to understand the techniques
And instructions on how to use the equipment

There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience initially students will be put into pairs to maximise on practical development through discussion, show and tell and group crit. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, and work with students one-to-one and in groups.

Some home work will be applicable.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided. It is recommended that you bring visual source material i.e. photos, postcards sketchbooks, drawings as inspiration.
Pencils, note pads, permanent markers (Black), apron, brushes varying sizes (House decorating Brushes are good) rubber gloves. You will be provided with paper to print on but if you wish to print on other materials e.g. fabrics, mirrored papers etc. you will be expected to bring your own.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We offer a range of short printmaking workshops that continue to focus on particular processes or longer courses where subjects areas and multiple techniques are taught. If you wish to continue working on your own projects and need technical support and facilitation then why not enrol onto print projects. Anne-Marie Foster

Anne-Marie studied Fine Art at Epsom School of Art & Design and Advanced Printmaking at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design. She has been working with printmaking, drawing, watercolour and mixed media since 1976 and has been involved in art education since 1987 at City Lit College of Adult Education, Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design, Bath Spa University School of Art & Design, Norwich School of Art & Design, Havering college of Further & Higher Education, V & A Museum Education department (printmaking workshops,) Morley College of Adult Education. Anne-Marie has exhibited nationally including the Hayward Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Battersea Arts Centre and internationally at Brooklyn Art Library USA, RAMOMA (Museum of Modern Art Nairobi Kenya,). Publications: Mandy Bonnell & Stephen Mumberson ‘Printmaking on a Budget’; Jane Stobbard ‘Drawing Matters’; Jackie Newell & Dee Whittington ‘Monoprinting’ Teaching forms an integral part of Anne-Marie’s art practice with both often acting as a stimulus for the other.
