Printmaking weekend: printing with recycled materials
Exciting and imaginative prints can be made from the most humble and unexpected materials creating wonderful textures that will add line and tone to your images. Make prints exploiting texture and colour using readily available and simple materials with a low environmental impact.

The course will look at using tetrapak printing as well as making traditional collagraphs which are a simple form of printmaking using a collage of textures which are glued onto a cardboard base. The course also includes quick simple methods of relief printing which can be done quickly and easily.Explore ways of printing your collagraphs on a traditional printing press in monochrome and colour.
What will we cover?
There will be a supply of found materials suitable for printmaking from, and of course you are welcome to bring your own - materials you may consider:
tetra-packs (orange juice cartons etc well washed)
textiles
packaging and thin pieces of cardboard
You will be introduced to using the press, the printmaking inks and how to make a colograph
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- make a simple relief print - use tetra pak to make a drypoint print - make a collagraph and print it using intaglio and relief printing methods - Use the print room equipment safely and effectively.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all levels. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstrations, handouts and practical assignments, individual tutoring and group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Basic materials will be provided. It is useful to bring sketches, photographs or other visual resources as a starting point. Need art supplies? Our partner London Graphic Centre has everything you need from pencil to printing services, at 15% off.
To get 15% LGC discount, students will need to show proof/ confirmation of enrolment of them being a student at City Lit.
