What is the course about?

This course will introduce you to mono printing and Collagraph printmaking techniques. This will help you to find a way to use natural objects as a starting place for your prints.

Using flowers, leaves and sticks to work from to create exciting layers and textures. You will be encouraged to ink and print your plates in different and interesting ways.

What will we cover?

We will start the first day by mono printing to help get a feel for how you might be able to print from the organic objects and create some interesting compositions.

Then you will be introduced to creating a collagraph plate that will be used to print from on the second day. This will include printing intaglio in single and multiple colours then moving on to adding a relief roll to add even more colour creating a variety of tones and rich colour prints.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Create mono prints in multiple colour
  • Prepare and design a collagraph plate
  • Prepare ink for printing intaglio and relief prints
  • Use an etching press to print your collagraph and mono prints
  • Confidentially use the presses and equipment in the print studio

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all learners, no previous experience is necessary.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of demonstration of methods and techniques, visual aids, practical exercises and one to one discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring any dried flowers and leaves with you on the first day although there will be some provided. Also, please do bring any sketchbooks or photos to refer to while working.

Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear as you will be working with inks.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
