What is the course about?
This is a practical course exploring and developing how to improve confidence in vocal communication skills for work and social situations. Our aim is for you to understand the effect that individual vocal habits have on public speaking and to gain confidence in speaking in public. The course will be delivered online.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Exercises to help develop use of breath, resonance, placement and articulation.
The development of listening skills.
The working for clarity of speech.
Many opportunities to speak in front of the group.

Create a structure for a successful presentation.
Speak in public with confidence.
Sustain good use of vocal technique.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
An open minded nature and a willingness to practice and persevere.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Work will be mainly practical supported by resources posted on Google Classroom. You need to be fluent in spoken English.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You need to provide paper and pen for note-taking.

Dr Allis Moss is a freelance journalist and broadcaster. Allis has worked for a number of channels and publications including Radio 1,2,3,4, 5, Five Live and World Service. She has contributed to flagship programmes like Radio 4's 'From Our Own Correspondent', BBC World TV news, The New European, The Independent, Time Out Paris, and was a UK correspondent for Radio France and Radio Netherlands Worldwide. On historical themes, Allis has appeared on Radio 3's 'Free Thinking' and written-presented World Service's 'Witness' and 'Heart and Soul'. Allis also had her own weekly column in her local paper and has been spotted on centre court at Wimbledon tennis (standing still at the mic!) as announcer-blogger for the world-famous championships. She completed her history PhD as a White Rose Scholar for Leeds University and gained distinction as a postgraduate in Historical Studies at Oxford University. Allis is the author of the local history book ‘The Jigsaw Journey’ supported by an Arts-in-Action award telling the stories of a West Sussex town. Allis was also a writer-announcer for BBC1 for three years and taught at the Global Institute, London Met and Southampton Solent universities.
