What is the course about?
This is a workshop for poets who are publishing in magazines, anthologies, individual collections, or pamphlets, and/or who are making short-film poems, or podcasts, and/or giving readings and performances.
Enrolled students may submit up to three poems which are work-in-progress prior to the course and will receive written tutor feedback and peer critiques on the day.
The aim is for everyone in whatever way they write to share work and to develop their poetry alongside like-minded, fellow poets.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Please bring up to three poems on the day (the ones you have emailed in advance) and these will be the subject of the workshop. You will also be inspired by handouts and online readings to write exercises on a choice of themes and/or in a choice of forms.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Write with a greater awareness of contemporary styles, theme and form
- Be better able to critique others’ work
- Be better able to edit your own work.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should be poets with an experience of publication in magazines, anthologies, individual collections, or pamphlets, and/or who are making short-film poems, or podcasts, and/or giving readings and performances.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The style of teaching is a workshop in which prepared work-in-progress is shared and peer and tutor feedback given. Some time will be set aside for writing exercises.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Once enrolled, please email no later than 12 noon on Monday 9th November to Sarah.Wardle@citylit.ac.uk the three poems (as one Word document) which you will bring to the workshop on Saturday 14th November. These can be in any style and should be work-in-progress on which you would like written tutor feedback and peer critiques.
