What is the course about?
This course is for advanced players of recorders of any size, and will develop your ensemble skills and playing
technique. You will play one-to-a-part in small groups and as part of a large ensemble.
What will we cover?
- Improving technical fluency and ensemble skills related directly to the repertoire
- Becoming comfortable with playing different instruments of the recorder family
- Tuning and transposition, stylistic awareness
- Playing a range of repertoire for smaller consort
- Playing as part of a large ensemble group, included double consort playing.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Comfortably play a variety of sizes of recorders
- Enjoy an improved technical level on the recorder
- Hold your own part both in a large ensemble and in a small consort with increased confidence
- Perform as part of an ensemble and consort with increased confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at those who already have experience of recorder ensemble playing, but who are interested in exploring more complex repertoire in a smaller group. Repertoire will be of approximately Grade 5-6 standard.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Classes are taught through tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (please bring your own instrument). Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study.
A regular practice routine is essential to make progress (ideally at least 20 minutes a session, 4 times per
week).
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need to bring your recorder(s). Exercises and teaching material will be provided by the tutor. You can borrow, and may wish to buy, the solo or consort music being studied.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may continue with Recorder consort for as many terms as you wish. Different repertoire is covered each term.

Peter is a professional viol and recorder player. He performs and records professionally, notably as a member of the renowned Rose Consort of Viols. He has several diplomas as a viol performer, from Köln and Den Hague, and German state qualifications as a teacher of recorder and viol to higher education. Peter has over thirty years’ teaching experience in one-to-one and group sessions, ranging from adult beginners and keen amateurs to students at music colleges, professionals, and children. He teaches regularly on international summer courses in Europe. At City Lit Peter teaches recorders and early music. He loves to communicate and bring out the beauty and sensitivity in "early" music.
