What will we cover?
- Technique: fingering, breathing and articulation (as appropriate) - Basic ornamentation (e.g. trills, mordents and turns) - Broadening repertoire in a variety of consort music - Listening, playing and general ensemble skills - Music reading/music theory related to the pieces played.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Play with iimproved control of breath, articulation and intonation - Read and execute a variety of basic embellishments (e.g. trills, mordents and turns) - Recognise and perform various different styles of recorder consort music - Read and interpret music notation accurately.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for those who have been learning recorder for at least two years at an upper-intermediate standard, or who have played before and want to brush up their skills to get back into consort playing. You need to be able to listen to and follow instructions in English and be confident with practising your part between lessons.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Classes are taught through tutor explanation and demonstration, playing along with the tutor and others in the class, individual practice. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor. A regular practice routine is essential to make progress (ideally at least 20 minutes per session, 4-5 times per week).
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You need your own instrument(s), as well as a notebook, pencil and eraser. Music will be supplied by the tutor in the classroom and via Google Classroom.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Recorder ensemble: intermediate runs each term, with different repertoire. You can take this course as many times as you wish before progressing to Recorder ensemble: advanced and/or Early music ensemble. You may wish to support your learning through Musicianship and Music theory and/or Music history courses.
Having graduated top of her class from the Cork School of Music (B.Mus), Caoimhe moved to London, where she gained a distinction in her Masters in Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was also awarded the school's Concert Recital Diploma (for outstanding recital performance). Caoimhe went on to become an Artist Fellow at the conservatoire and was also invited to take part in the Handel House Talent Scheme (2014-15). She has studied with Ian Wilson, Robert Ehrlich, Pamela Thorby (GSMD) and Elizabeth Jones (CSM), as well as pariticipating in masterclasses with Kees Boeke, Karl van Steenhoven, Piers Adams, Sebastien Marq, Dan Laurin, Drora Bruck and Eric Bosgraaf. Caoimhe has achieved a number of competition successes in Ireland and the UK. She was a semi-finalist in the Irish Freemason's Young Musician of the Year for two consecutive years, a finalist in the Worshipful Company of Needlemaker's competition, a finalist in the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarships and won first prize in the Recorder Conservatoire competition at the North London Festival of Music. www.palisanderecorders.com
