What is the course about?

The final week will focus on developing a personal project with tutor support that brigns together all the skills and techniques learnt on the course.
What will we cover?
You will be introduced to the sewing machine, trying out a variety of decorative stitch techniques. Upcycling and the Japanese textile technique Boro Boro will be methods covered to use scrap fabrics and garments.
Textile embellishing and surface decoration ideas will be explored, from simplified applications to more ambitious techniques including applique, crazy patchwork, lace inserts, heat transfer print and silk-screen printing processes to help transform your old T-shirt and cast off garments.
Ideas for designs will be developed through visual research, drawing and experimental mark making. Students will be encouraged to keep an on-going file of handouts, samples produced in class, sketchbook and step-by-step photography to record work in progress.
What will I achieve?

-Operate a sewing machine independently and with confidence
-Use a range of textile manipulation methods
-Use range of surface print techniques
-Generate innovate and creative fashion garments or accessories.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Although not essential it would be beneficial to have a basic knowledge of drawing and a basic understanding of how to operate a sewing machine.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught as a group and on a 1-1 basis, through powerpoint presentations, set tasks, demonstrations, discussions, hand-outs and group crits. You will be encouraged to continue developing work at home.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need to collate a variety of existing garments and scrap fabrics; worn or unused it does not matter as long as they are not new. A cotton t-shirt and no less than 2 garments: jackets, denim jeans, striped shirts, dresses etc, an endless range of options, the choice is yours!
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
The techniques learnt on this course can to be translated into a variety of textile outcomes. There are a range of classes in Contemporary Textiles and Crafts where you can explore the possibilities. Please browse the website to view our upcoming courses.
