This course is about revising and developing work you have already done on a Stage 1 evening course or an intensive course. You will review the speech work you have already covered and explore ways of further extending its use in everyday life. You will continue working towards becoming more open about and desensitised to stammering.
What will we cover?
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the course curriculum and the content will be determined by the needs of you and the other group participants. There is likely to be some revision of identification, desensitisation and speech work. Topics that are sometimes covered include; managing time pressure, assertiveness, telephone skills and presentations.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Outcome will be determined by your own aims. We deliberately do not set specific learning objectives for this course as we believe it is important for people at this stage of therapy to be working on their own specific goals.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for people who stammer and who have had previous speech therapy. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary
If you are new to us, you need to have some advice on the course suitability. Please mail speechtherapy@citylit.ac.uk to arrange this.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There is a large component of practical work. Visual aids including video and handouts are used. Work will be undertaken both in the whole group and smaller sub-groups using a wide variety of communication activities. You are encouraged to extend therapy into working on your speech outside and to take an increasing level of responsibility for your learning.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
None.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may choose to do another Stage 2 stammering therapy course, or one of our topic-based courses.
