What is the course about?

You will learn Russian through immersion in language specifically related to Russian art. The emphasis is on developing listening and speaking skills. There will be some writing assignments too. 

In the first part of this course you will learn about museums and collections in Russia, Russian art collectors, modern art museums, galleries and art auctions.

What will we cover?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- acquire knowledge about well-known art museums and art collections and the vocabulary to talk about them.
- enhance your knowledge of the Hermitage and other art collections, as well as modern art galleries in Russia.
- develop your own language skills and abilities to talk about art collections.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable if you have completed Russian at Level 3, or you are a confident learner at Level 3 or are studying Russian at Level 4 or above.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course involves listening and reading activities (available on-line), using video and audio files, discussions, there will be some task-based and project-based assignments.

Homework will be set every week, which students should be willing and able to do in order to benefit fully from the course.

Students will need the course book “Russian through Art” by Anna S. Kudyma and Olga E. Kagan, published by Routledge ISBN 9781138400276.

Eugeniya Clark

Eugeniya is a Russian teacher who lived most of her life in Moscow. She holds a degree in language teaching from Moscow State University as well as a PGCE. She has also trained to be a language teacher at City Lit. Eugeniya has taught Russian at all levels in a wide range of institutions including secondary schools, London universities and various language centres and agencies. She enjoys teaching adults who need Russian for travelling, communicating with friends or who would like to learn about Russian history, politics and literature. Her passions are languages, literature, art, and travelling.
