Russian: an introduction for beginners in collaboration with the British Museum

This four-week course, presented in partnership with the British Museum, coincides with its major exhibition: Arctic: culture and climate (22 October 2021 February 2021). It will give you a flavour of one of the main languages, Russian which is spoken in the Arctic region .Please note, this course will be taught online and not at the British Museum.

What is the course about?

Learn the basics of Russian to help you understand Russian culture for the Arctic exhibition at the British Museum.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Basic introduction (name, what you do, where you are from and where you live), basic routines and activities, a short introduction to Arctic Russia.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Exchange greetings
-Give and request personal information (name, number, email)
-Talk about countries and nationalities
-Basic introduction to family
-Use numbers in a variety of contexts (date, time…)
-Talk about basic routines
-Talk about winter activities and summer activities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you are a complete beginner.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classroom activities will follow the traditional approach but will aim at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work using Zoom. Students are expected to participate in the activities and to do homework every week.

This course will be delivered online, and will involve tutor presentation and class discussion. Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged. To fully participate in this online class you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Resources and handouts will be provided by the tutor through Google classroom.

Navcha is an international freelance Russian and Mongolian linguist and has had many prestigious assignments in Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, The Hague and Dublin as well as in London and beyond Europe in the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam for institutions such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNDP and USAID.
