We will start with an initial warm up and stretch, followed by revision of key Salsa fundamentals. We will then build on partner work, learning new steps, patterns and variations, focusing on technique, control and flow. Throughout the course we will explore Cross Body Lead (CBL) variations including inside and outside turns, as well as Copa and different exits from common figures. We will also work on improvisation skills, helping students feel confident dancing socially with a partner. Towards the end of the course we will focus on spinning technique and introduce double spins.
What will we cover?
We will develop technique and musicality. We will explore Cross Body Lead (CBL) variations, inside and outside turns, Copa technique and its different exits, as well as new ways to transition out of familiar figures. We will focus strongly on rhythm and musicality, lead/follow technique, partner connection and confidence, while encouraging students to improvise and create combinations naturally during partner work.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Perform Cross Body Lead patterns with inside and outside turns.
Use Copa with different exits and variations.
Demonstrate improved spinning technique and control.
Begin to perform double spins with correct preparation.
Improve lead/follow connection and timing.
Improvise using different combinations and transitions while dancing.
Confidently dance Improvers level Salsa with a partner.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is designed for improvers who already have a basic understanding of Salsa fundamentals. It is ideal for those who have completed a Beginners Salsa course or already feel comfortable with basic steps, simple turns and Cross Body Lead.
In any dance class there will be student’s of all levels and abilities. We all have different learning techniques and paces. If your first class seems overwhelming and you can’t get it the first time, don’t worry: dance is heavily reliant on repetition so it will happen. We want you to learn and to have fun so just give it your best and keep coming back!
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to: • Follow spoken instructions. • Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance. • Work within groups and pairs safely.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught in a group and often paired with a partner. There is no work outside of the course but it is always beneficial to practice and evolve during your personal time.
HEALTH CHECK You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please wear comfortable shoes with not too sticky soles (i.e. not thick rubber soles) and shoes that are secure so no flip-flops or mules, stilettos, sandals or platforms. You may wish to invest in some proper dance shoes but until then you will be fine in shoes that you can comfortably turn in.
Avoid clothing that is tight or restrictive, as it will make it difficult to dance.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can retake the course to review the improver steps and really master the techniques or try our Ballroom & Latin: beginners or Ballroom & Latin: improvers courses.
