What is the course about?
Learn the basics of Sanskrit and apply them to objects and inscriptions held at the British Museum.
What will we cover?
The foundations of Sanskrit. Details of the content and of the objects will be provided at the start of the course by the tutor.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Translate basic phrases in English.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable if you are a complete beginner. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group activities.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will combine classroom work with visits each week to the galleries. The classroom-based activities will follow the traditional approach but will aim at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work. Students are expected to participate in the activities and to do homework every week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Resources and handouts will be provided by the tutor.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
A progression course at the British Museum or at City Lit. The tutor will be able to advise you.
General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
