What is the course about?

This is a beginners course which will enable you to read basic Sanskrit in the Devanagari script.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will learn the Devanagari script and its transliteration in roman letters; get familiar with the idea of an inflected language through ‘a’ ending masculine nouns; learn singular forms of close to 20 most commonly used regular verbs in the present tense.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read the letters of the Devanagari script and write simple words;
- make simple sentences in the present tense.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners course. You do not need any particular skill. As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
If you have never studied grammar before , you may benefit from attending a Grammar for ancient languages : an introduction at the Citylit.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course is taught online, using a variety of digital resources designed to duplicate a classroom experience. You should be prepared to spend 1-2 hours for prep outside the classroom.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

For this module, the tutor will be providing all the necessary handouts.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can enrol for Sanskrit Level 1 Module 2 at CityLit. This is a continuation module starting next term. Please ask your tutor for advice.
