What is the course about?
The aim of the course is to cover a variety of genres of Sanskrit literature, in order to give students a good grounding in different textual styles.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will read directly from texts like the Mahabharata, the Hitopadesha, and the Veda. We will discuss specific topics in grammar as we come upon them.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
read Sanskrit literature with greater confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You will need a reasonable grasp of the Sanskrit language, though the group will welcome different levels of expertise and experience.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Students will prepare passages in advance of class and then we we will read and translate together.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The course textbooks are 'A Sanskrit Reader' by Charles Rockwell Lanman and William Dwight Whitney's 'Sanskrit Grammar.'.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can continue with new texts in the subsequent sessions of the Sanskrit Reading Circle.
