Screen acting summer school

Course Dates: 13/07/20 - 17/07/20
Time: 10:00 - 16:00
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Gary Grant

This unique, intensive course guides you through the key screen acting techniques required to get a truthful performance on camera.

What is the course about?

The vast majority of professional opportunities for actors these days are on television and the internet. The theatrical tradition in which most actors are trained provides irreplaceable and essential skills for the process of acting, but offers little help with the medium in which actors are most likely to earn a living. This course will take place in our fully equipped TV studio, where participants will enhance their imaginative and expressive abilities and work to develop ‘on-cue’ truthful emotional responses. Work in the TV studio will provide the further skills and adjustments necessary to create a vivid and effective performance on screen.

What will we cover?

We will look at the technical considerations of working on camera and explore techniques to produce solid and reliable performances when working to camera.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Perform confidently to camera applying the basic technical skills required for screen acting
Adjust your performance choices to incorporate the technical demands of screen acting;.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for those completely new to screen acting. No experience in Acting for Camera is required however, you will get more out of the course if you have some understanding of the acting process. You may want to complete acting: beginners before enrolling.

You should be able to work within a group setting with openness, sensitivity, and mutual supportiveness.

You will need to be able to take notes and to work within groups and pairs safely.

You will need to be able to express yourself and communicate clearly and fluently.

You will be willing and able to do some preparation and rehearsal outside the class.

You will need to be able to listen and respond to instructions and feedback and be interested in listening to, and learning from, the responses of your tutor and other students on any work that is discussed, observed, and performed.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a practical acting course in which students will work alone, in pairs, and in groups, according to the exercise.

As an intensive, five-day experience, some preparation for each of the following day’s work will be necessary outside of class (such as learning lines from short pieces of text or developing sensory triggers).

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You’ll need paper and a pencil for making notes.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Enrol onto one of our advanced screen acting classes or consider a course in Stanislavski or a general acting class such as Text and Performance.
