We will concentrate instead how rich and vibrant screen prints can be achieved through producing both laser-cut and hand-cut stencils, and how to build a vivid composition from your own imagery.

This course will introduce basic Photoshop and InDesign skills to transform your imagery into vectors, followed by turning them into a stencil. You will explore how to use a variety of stencils to create your composition and how to layer accordingly. You will be producing multiple stencils, both hand cut and laser cut and using them to make screenprints.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suited for absolute beginners to professional artists. No particular skills are required.
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a series of demonstrations and workshops. Technical information will be supported by the students individual note taking and throughout the sessions you will be guided by your tutor.
There is no requirement to complete work outside of the class however bringing along ideas and imagery you may want to work from will improve your outcomes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All basic materials are provided. You should bring to the first class sources of imagery to be used for reference / visual inspiration (sketches, magazine cuttings, on-going work etc.) as a way in to starting personal projects.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
There are further opportunities for pursuing screen printing courses - ask your tutor for guidance. Alternatively, there are skills based and creative approach courses in other processes such as intaglio or relief. Your course tutor can advise.
Rolina E. Blok is an artist of Dutch/Romanian origin based in London. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a speciality in Contemporary Approaches to Printmaking. Blok’s practice expands into the digital realm as well as printmaking, sculpture, performance art and curating. Blok is part of the Visual Arts team at City Lit and is currently a Screenprint Fellow at the Royal Academy. I think that working with the other tutors we can inspire and help the students advance in their practice and explore the creative potential within combined digital and print media. I am an advocate for experimentation and would like to instigate conversations surrounding the relationship between the physical realm and the digital world. The method is the vessel for the message to be portrayed. From pixel to halftone and back again.
