What is the course about?

This course focusses on screen printing for intermediate and experienced learning, looking at how screenprint techniques and imagery can be expanded and developed We will be looking at hands on creative techniques using screen printing that can give your work a new lease of life. The aim of this course is to teach you how to create and push your own screen printed work, which you may choose to go on to sell or display at art markets etc.

What will we cover?

The course will focus on improving your skills in screen printing process as a whole, creative screen printing techniques, and will allow you to develop your own personal projects. . We will also be looking at the wider contemporary use of the process as a whole and how this could relate to your work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• generate your own screenprint projects
• creatively expand your skillset with inks, process and related practice in screenprint
• research, select and prepare artwork for photo transfer etc.
• Produce your own screen printed work to an improved level above basic.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No skills or previous experience with Graphic Arts or Printmaking required and is open to first timers who want to learn more about screen printing and the Graphic arts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• Tutor demonstration and setting of tasks
• Looking at samples and examples of contemporary practice
• 1:1 support and guidance
• Group-work and opportunities for independent practice and learning through personal projects.
• There will be voluntary homework tasks set between sessions for you to further develop ideas and research.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Nothing needed for the first day. All basic materials are supplied.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is an excellent springboard into further printmaking or image making courses. The graphic arts presents a broad area for study, you may wish to develop your printmaking, your drawing or photography. Your tutor will be on hand to advice how you may personally progress onto future City Lit courses.

Adam Hogarth Tutor Website

Adam Hogarth is an artist based in London. Adam completed a BA Hons in Fine Art at Northumbria University and an MFA in Fine Art Printmaking at The Royal College of Art, from 20016-2020 he has been the Printmaking Fellow at The Royal Academy of Arts. After graduating from his MFA Adam worked for Advanced Graphics London, a fine art print publishers, specialising in screenprint and woodblock printing. In the three years working there he produced prints for some of the leading artists and galleries in the UK. He is currently the head screenprinter at Thames-Side Print Studio. Adam's practice is multi-diciplinary, although his strengths lie in print. His work tackles notions of Auto-Destruction, an arts movement that gained notoriety in the 50's and 60's by the artist Gustav Metzger. Adam has exhibited nationally and internationally, including: Tate Britain, The Royal Academy of Arts, ICA, DAnielle Arnaud Gallery, The Finland Print Triennale and Kobe Sans University (Japan). At City Lit Adam teaches screenprinting where his classes accomodate a variety of students from beginner to advanced.
