What is the course about?

Working through and completing a personal sculpture project in a workshop environment, with the guidance of a tutor who is an experienced sculptor.

What will we cover?

The course will endeavour to respond to the individual demands of the projects in hand and with that in mind will cover a variety of topics, processes and concepts.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

You will learn how to bring a three-dimensional sculptural project to fruition.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at students who already have a grounding in a process and material and require advice, guidance and workshop facilities to complete it.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Students are expected to bring a project and will be taught on a one-to-one basis. Although there may be demonstrations that are relevant to more than one student.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The use of workshop tools, consumables and basic materials are supplied. As stated above students are expected to bring their own project to complete.

It may be necessary for you to contact the tutor before enrolling via the Visual Arts department visualarts@citylit.ac.uk to ensure your project is appropriate. For example, if there are specific pieces of equipment you would need to undertake your project.

You must wear sturdy shoes. Please also wear old working clothes or bring overalls.

Please be advised, if you have a pacemaker, for your own safety it will not be possible for you to use the plasma cutter. Additionally, you must keep a safe distance while it is in operation (the distance is marked with a yellow line on the floor).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The City Lit sculpture department offers a wide range of exciting courses that will allow you to progress from beginner to advanced and learn a range of techniques. After this course you may wish to join a similar course to develop your skills further or try something completely different. We offer courses in prop making, metal, clay, wax, carving in stone and wood, mould making and casting in Jesmonite, or pewter and much more! Alternatively, you may wish to progress onto the year-long City Lit Sculpture course VU841, which helps you to build your own individual sculpture practice and culminates with an exhibition in a London gallery.

We are constantly adding new courses. Please ask your tutor for advice or browse the City Lit website for inspiration. It is also possible to contact our visual arts team by emailing visualarts@citylit.ac.uk, or calling 020 7492 2700 Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm.
