Self-portrait in printmaking techniques

The Extended ‘Selfie’ is an intensive, practice-led printmaking course that explores identity and ideas of self through contemporary print practice. What is the course about?

Over five weeks you will work in a fully equipped print studio to develop a series of self-informed prints using monoprinting, drypoint and screen printing. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, process-led learning and the development of a personal visual language.

You will investigate identity using a wide range of source material, which may include:

  • Mobile phone selfies
  • Observational or expressive self-drawings
  • Family photographs and childhood memories
  • Significant places and lived experiences
  • Personal texts such as diary excerpts, poetry or song lyrics
  • Sentimental objects, clothing or symbolic imagery

You will be encouraged to work conceptually and metaphorically, using printmaking processes to explore themes of memory, repetition, absence and transformation.

What will we cover?

Through guided demonstrations and supported studio time, you will:

  • Explore trace monotypes and monoprints
  • Create drypoint plates focusing on line, texture and tone
  • Learn screen printing techniques including screen preparation, exposure, registration and layering
  • Combine and overprint techniques, incorporating collage and text where appropriate

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Use monoprinting, drypoint and screen printing techniques with confidence
  • Develop and communicate a clear conceptual approach to exploring ideas of self
  • Produce a resolved body of work demonstrating effective use of composition, colour and texture
  • Reflect on and discuss your work and the work of others in group discussion
  • Show greater understanding of your creative process and how personal themes can be translated into print

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels are welcome. The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced printmakers who wish to develop new ideas. Basic Photoshop skills and knowledge of digital photography would be beneficial but are not essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations will enable you to understand techniques and use equipment safely and effectively. You will learn through practical studio work, guided experimentation and group discussion.

Some independent development work, such as gathering imagery or refining ideas, may be suggested between sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic printmaking materials are included. There is nothing you need to bring to the first session.

If you wish to experiment with specific papers, fabrics or specialist inks, you may choose to bring your own materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to continue with further printmaking courses such as screen printing workshops or studio-based print projects. Alternatively, you could use the work produced on this course as part of a portfolio for more advanced study in printmaking or fine art. Your tutor can advise on suitable progression routes.
