What is the course about?
Going back to basics, learn how to use a sewing machine. Each week you will build on your sewing skills, working towards completing a pair of elasticated trousers.
What will we cover?
With individual use of a Bernina sewing machine, the tutor will guide you through how to use the sewing machine and the basic sewing techniques used in making up basic garments. You will have the opportunity to develop your sewing, cutting and pressing skills, and will be guided step by step through this process by your tutor.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Use the sewing machine
- Use practical sewing skills for making seams
- Practice the application of interfacing
- Put in a zip
- Create a buttonhole and sew on a button, using professional techniques
- Machine hems
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference
- Press and finish samples
- Demonstrate sewing techniques used in the making up of garments.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
For beginners and students from basic introductory City Lit sewing courses. This is an introductory course in which students can learn the basic sewing machine skills and, sewing techniques used in clothesmaking.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations and to understand health and safety information. Hand-outs will be available to support your learning. You will also be encouraged to take part in group discussions.
You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from having support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice, one to one instruction and guidance.
Additional / extension tasks may be set for you to complete at home and outside of the course hours. Completion of additional tasks is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Where required your tutor will discuss these with you during each session.
This course is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations and handouts etc. and may be asked to complete learner progress records. You can find help via the student help centre on the City Lit website.
Please note it is important that you sign up and log in to your course Google classroom prior to the first session. Joining details will be sent to you via email (check your junk/spam folder).
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Access to basic materials and resources are available as part of this course.
We advise you to bring a notebook/sketchbook for drawing, experimentation and notes on your learning.
Other materials and equipment required as part of the course, will be discussed by your tutor during the first session.

Rachel has BA degree in Fashion Design from the University of East London specialising in Womenswear, but has a keen interest children's and menswear. She currently works as a freelance pattern cutter with experience working in all areas of the industry from the high street brands like ASOS to the designer high end and Bridal. Whether its casual tees or evening gowns Rachel has done it all. Rachel enjoys sharing these skills with others and believes in more making and mending their own clothes and just finding a fun creative outlet through fashion.
