What is the course about?

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 global goals created by the United Nations in 2015 to help all countries work together to build a fairer, safer and more sustainable world by the year 2030.

They cover the big challenges facing people and our planet — things like ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, protecting the environment, fighting climate change, and promoting peace and equality.

This online taster session explores sustainable development through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and examines how the climate crisis is shaping our ability to achieve them. The session introduces key ideas in an accessible way, helping learners understand why climate action is central to global progress.

What will we cover?

  • The social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
  • Key United Nations principles, including the Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainability.
  • Current global progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • How climate-related events affect communities and ecosystems.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Identify and reference the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Explain how extreme climate-related events impact local communities and natural environments.
  • Make a clear case for stronger international cooperation on climate and development goals.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This taster session is suitable for beginners. No prior knowledge of the SDGs or climate policy is required—just an interest in global challenges and a willingness to explore new ideas.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The session will be delivered online through an interactive presentation. There is no required work outside the class, though optional resources will be suggested for anyone who wants to explore further.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no extra costs. Learners may find it helpful to bring a notebook or digital device for jotting down reflections, but this is optional.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may be interested in further courses exploring global development, climate change or sustainable economics.
