Ongoing work to improve vocal technique. Improve phrasing and timing in a song. Free the rhythm of the lyric - moving towards improvisation. Learning new repertoire, and learning to source your own. Musicianship matters relevant to improvisation.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- know what to practise, and how to practise - be accustomed to researching songs/performers - have a clear grasp of jazz styles - use the mic with confidence in solo performance - be able to perform with confidence - use the class appraisal of your solo effort to develop your ability to perform.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Singers should have completed jazz singing 3. Newcomers may enter by audition showing you can deliver a jazz tune well and understand essential terminology and protocols.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Warm up and technical exercises sung together every session. Learn tunes/solos/exercises by following tutor demonstration and lead from the piano. Solo presentations, giving and receiving constructive criticism. Sharing ideas and repertoire. Practice of your music material between classes is essential.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You are advised to record parts of class for revision/practice at home. Music materials will be provided by the tutor but you will be invited to field your own repertoire also..

Emzee is an experienced professional vocalist of the highest caliber who hails from a musical family. Her father Don Haywoode is the legendary vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer & arranger who gained critical acclaim with THE VELOURS, an American touring band whose first tour was with Ray Charles. Emzee was signed to RCA records as a recording artist and session musician and worked with an impressive array of artists such as Bo Diddley, Dr John, Mtume, Hugh Masekala, Osibisa, Herbie Hancock, Jools Holland, Barry White, Paul Weller, Lou Rawls, & Cassandra Wilson. Emzee’s influences and training is derived directly from Doo Wop and street corner singing tradition. Emzee is a versatile and rounded musician who pours her skills into her songwriting. Her first release ‘Don’t Poison Me’ on Boss Records was an underground hit and co-written with Livingstone Brown. While continuing to perform and write music, she also dedicates her energy to teaching music.
