What is the course about?
This course aims to consolidate your knowledge and application of a strong, healthy vocal technique and to strengthen your singing all round, the emphasis shifting more towards performance.
What will we cover?
-Vocal and physical exercises and further guidance on technique
-Broadening of individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability
-Performance technique - the art of communicating with an audience
-Understanding and learning from constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of your voice.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Perform studied songs musically and accurately
- Apply knowledge of suitable repertoire to your song choices.
- Demonstrate a growing knowledge of what is required in order to sing and perform successfully.
- Understand the value of critical evaluation in vocal and performance technique.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
-You will need to have completed ‘Singing 3’ (or equivalent).
-You will also need to have a basic understanding of musical notation, i.e. key and time signatures, note values etc so that you can now learn a short, simple song by yourself and sing it in front of a class.
-You will need the ability to learn repertoire and present on a regular basis for this class
-Note that sight singing is not necessary at this stage
-You must also be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

You could also drop in to one of our advice sessions where we can hear you sing and help you choose the right course. Please bring a piece to sing with simple piano accompaniment.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Vocal exercises and songs which may be in a variety of languages, as a group and individually through tutor guided repertoire. You will improve your general understanding of singing through discussion arising from the practical work, via tutor and group feedback. There will be demonstration and lectures. You are encouraged to practise daily.
This course will be delivered online, and will involve tutor presentation and class discussion. Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged. To fully participate in this online class you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
A notebook and pencil for taking notes, sheet music as required and a course book as advised. You are encouraged to acquire copies of music you are studying during the year. Music may be purchased new or second-hand and/or available from local libraries. Westminster Central Music Library (Victoria) and the Barbican Music Library have very comprehensive collections. Suitable scores may also be available from http://imslp.org/.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
The course comprises of 3 terms across the year and continues with Singing 4B/4C
At the end of the year we recommend that you move on to ‘Singing 5’ or if you are confident learning music independently you can try one of our workshop classes: ‘Singing workshop’ or ‘Singing repertoire workshop’.
You may also choose to repeat any modules from ‘Singing 4’ if you wish to further consolidate your skills at this level.
