What is the course about?
This course is for people who are learning to sing but have difficulty in pitching notes reliably and confidently. We will explore ways of improving your pitching accuracy through vocal and listening exercises and singing songs. There will be group work and individual practical work.
What will we cover?
- An introduction to how the voice works
- Listening and singing exercises to help develop a reliable sense of pitch
- Basic music theory relating to understanding pitch.
- Group vocal exercises to explore your voice
- Singing simple songs.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Display a basic understanding of how your voice works
- sing simple songs confidently in a group
- display an enhanced understanding of your pitching challenges
- identify which strategies will help you sing in tune.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is for singers who have difficulty in finding the right starting note, singing an accurate sequence of notes (in an exercise or song) or aren’t sure when they are singing a melody accurately. You need to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Vocal warm-ups and simple songs and exercises to build confidence, promote healthy voice use, and
develop your ear/voice relationship. Singing will be mainly as a group; however, because of the individual nature of pitching challenges please be prepared to sing a little on your own. You may be asked to do some homework.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring a pencil and a folder for worksheets, handouts and music.
