What is the course about?

This enjoyable course is for beginners who would like to experience and explore the major ways of making pottery throwing on the potters wheel, pinching, coiling, and slab building. Pots will be decorated, glazed and fired during the course.

What will we cover?

The aim of this course is to introduce the basic making techniques used in Ceramics. You will learn to make pinch and coiled forms, slab built forms and basic thrown forms such as cylinders and bowls. You will be shown simple surface decoration techniques and apply them to the work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Make simple forms using the techniques of:
- Pinching
- Coiling
- Slab building
- Throwing
- Decorate the forms with coloured slips
- Glaze your work using department glazes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for newcomers to pottery. You should be able to understand simple written and verbal instructions to follow demonstrations and read handouts and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers in order to do very simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstration, group and individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There is a charge of £2.75 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24 per bag/ £12 per half bag.

In the final week you will need to pay for materials that you have used during the course, payments to be made by contactless card reader.
