Course Dates: 09/06/19 - 30/06/19
Time: 10:15 - 16:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Tutor: Anne Teahan

Explore the human body as an expressive form with a focus on the subtle and shifting colours within the skin. Use blending and layering techniques in both oil and acrylic paint.

Description

What is the course about?

This life painting workshop brings together a unique combination of approaches to painting the nude. Firstly it explores the subtle, elusive colours within the skin. Secondly it explores imaginative connections between natural landscape and the surface planes and curvature of the body.

Inspired by artists and photographers working from Nature, you will develop two large paintings from abstracted areas of the body, after carrying out a range of surface-based colour-mixing and layering exercises in oil and acrylic paint.

What will we cover?

- Observational painting from abstracted areas of the body.
- Colour-mixing on the surface using oil and acrylic techniques.
- Connections between landscape, the body and nature in painting and photography.
- How artists use abstraction and enlargement of natural form in their work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- produce a series of observational studies of torsos in acrylic and oil paint.
- mix colour on the surface with increased sensitivity.
- understand an imaginative connection between the body, landscape and painting within a range of artists’ work.
- paint from life and from observation with greater confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For students who have experienced at least one life class and/or completed an introductory painting course.
You will need a willingness to follow a fresh and systematic approach to life painting.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of demonstrations, practical exercises, painting directly from the life model, and slide shows of artists.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided for the course. There is a small charge if students wish to use Bockingford paper for their main painting.

Skin Deep is a really well-conceived and well-structured course. I gained a lot from it, especially regarding the use of acrylic and oil paints in representation of the body. In fact, I found it so useful and stimulating that I did it twice.

I really enjoyed the Skin Deep course, I learnt so much in a short space of time and it has really influenced me in my approach to painting and how I observe art in galleries. I am thinking of taking the course again.

I would highly recommend the skin deep course as I learned to look at the body from a different perspective. I learned how to really look at skin tones and see colours I had never seen before. I learned how to build a painting from nothing. I learned how to look at darkest darks and lightest lights and their impact on the painting. When I saw my effort presented in class alongside a similar style masterpiece my confidence and comfort in painting soared. I highly recommend this course for aspiring figurative and also for landscape painters.

I attended the "Deep Skin" course a few years ago. It was so good I did it twice!

[Tutor's name removed] is an excellent teacher. She guided me on using the different media, and gave me a better understanding of the structure of the body and its layers, and the use of chiaroscuro on the skin.

For me it was an important stepping stone in my journey to learn life drawing and portraiture. I went on to take other courses with the tutor later on.
