In order to use social media to promote a business. the marketer or administrator should not only understand how to post on the platform, they should also understand how the platform works on a broader scale. This course will cover three important elements of social media. First, we will discuss how the algorithm works and compare social media platforms to learn how to work smarter. Next, we will discuss engagement, how to engage on social media. Finally, we will look at trends on the various social media channels. You will understand that learning how to use trends and posting regularly on social media is an important part of using the platforms but engagement is also critical, which feeds into the algorithm performance.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This class is suitable for those who are using social media to promote their own business or if you are acting as a social media manager and assisting others to promote their business on social media. Suitable for beginners we cover the basics on how to engage on the platform how to measure your engagement and how to see the performance of your posts in comparison to before and after engagement strategies are implemented. During the class you will also learn three engage 3 to 5 engagement strategies that you can implement immediately.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This class will focus on social media platforms and will be taught from a practical and theoretical perspective. The instructor will use a presentation and online examples, students are welcome to bring their smart phone to download the applications taught in class. It will also incorporate other websites, students may find it useful to take notes. Notes will be provided in Google Classroom.

You should have access to your existing social media account(s). If you don’t have existing account(s) you will need to have a valid email address and its password to sign up for a new account. This will help you to practice the course content during the class and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Amber holds an MBA in International Marketing, and previously worked as a Marketing Manager and Account Director for various marketing agency in London, where she was an early adopter in using social media in campaigns with high success. After the recession in 2009, she started teaching adults how to use social media to promote their business, often working with career changers who were switching gears after being made redundant to start their own businesses. She began teaching social media at City Lit in 2015. Her approach is dynamic and engaging, vowing to make the scary world of social media accessible to everyone from the tech-savvy to the technophobe!
