What is the course about?
The course aims to enable you to communicate simply in Spanish, to understand and use the language for travel or social purposes and to enjoy and appreciate the cultural background of Spanish-speaking countries.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Introducing yourself, food and drink, shopping, numbers, the time, directions.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Basic greetings
- Introduce yourself
- Ask for food/drinks
- Public places
- Give/ask for the time
- Ask for simple directions.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Beginner's course - no previous knowledge required.
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Communicative/direct method approach, with the emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills. Methods include question and answer, pair practice, group and whole class work and role-play.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Spanish 1: module 1 or module 2 in September or January, speak to your teacher for advice. However, you will be revising some of the work already covered in this introductory course. Please enrol as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Maria Isalt has a BA in Economic Studies from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and a Postgraduate in Education from OU. She has been teaching general and business Spanish for more than twelve years. She has a special interest in dyslexia and also delivers courses for the DELE official exams of Instituto Cervantes.
