Improve your elementary Spanish on this communicative course, taught in Spanish with the emphasis on speaking and listening. Suitable if you have completed 'Spanish beginners: module 3' or equivalent. Based on units 1-5 of 'Ele Actual A2 (libro del alumno)' and exercise book (SM Publishers).

What is the course about?

The course enables students to communicate in a Spanish-speaking country in everyday situations and to enjoy the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

What will we cover?

Plans and intentions, health, shopping for food: quantities and prices, ordering food and drinks, saying what you have done recently.

Grammar: structures to express obligation, plans and intentions in the future, present perfect.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- talk about your plans and intentions
- talk about your health
- buy food and ask for prices
- ask for food in a restaurant
- say what you have or haven' t done recently.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Spanish 1 or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

This is a useful course with a nice and gentle progression through the vocabulary and grammar. The teacheris very kind and patient. She ensures that everyone is involved and she stretches us but always stays within our comfort zone. Subsequently, no one ever gives up.

Maria Isalt has a BA in Economic Studies from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and a Postgraduate in Education from OU. She has been teaching general and business Spanish for more than twelve years. She has a special interest in dyslexia and also delivers courses for the DELE official exams of Instituto Cervantes.
