What is the course about?
This course explores the cultural diversity in Spain, distinguishing and contrasting the different Spanish regions: North vs South; East vs Interior Lands; Balearic vs Canaries Islands. It also explains how the geography and the history of each region influence their different cultural expressions such as monuments, languages, and gastronomy.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will cover different cultural aspects of each Spanish region. We will begin with the region´s names and their locations, along with their geography, landscapes, and climate. Besides, we will look at the main World Heritage Site monuments within their historical context. Linked to the history and geography of the regions, we will also discover the different languages that exist in Spain, and their diverse and traditional gastronomy.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- have cultural awareness about the Spanish cultural diversity.
- distinguish between Spanish regions and their cultural differences.
- understand the importance of geography and history in Spanish cultural expressions.
- learn about Spanish key monument sites, variety of languages, and traditional gastronomy.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Ideal if you have an intermediate level of Spanish, are doing 'Spanish 3 lower', 'Spanish 3 upper' or have an equivalent level (B1 level).
For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at http://www.citylit.ac.uk/self-assess-your-level.
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The course is based on the tutor’s own resources.

Hola Citylit explorers :-) My name is Vanesa, originally from Madrid, Spain, and I have been living as well as teaching Spanish and delivering cultural courses in London for the last 15 years. I am passionate about languages, culture, history, and art, which are topics that I have integrated into my lessons to raise cultural awareness. Back in Madrid, I completed my Degree in Journalism, and since then I have collaborated with different media on cultural topics. After my degree, I did a Masters in Spanish Language and Literature Teaching, which enabled me to obtain my Teacher Status in England and to start teaching in 2008. During these years, I have been delivering language and culture content courses to adult groups and private students of all levels and cultural backgrounds, in diverse working environments (language schools, companies, charities...). This experience has offered me the opportunity to develop material, techniques, and my own teaching style. I also did a Masters in Intercultural Communication which contributed to my understanding of cultural differences; an aspect that I apply to my teaching.
Please note: We reserve the right to change our tutors from those advertised. This happens rarely, but if it does, we are unable to refund fees due to this. Our tutors may have different teaching styles; however we guarantee a consistent quality of teaching in all our courses.
