What is the course about?

In this lively course, you will learn about art concepts in Spanish and how to analyze the evolution of Spanish art through the study of a few paintings and sculptures that can be found in London's museums and galleries.
It will be composed of 6 sessions in class and a final visit to the National Gallery.

What will we cover?

In this module, we will focus on paintings and sculptures that represent some specific art periods: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. We will therefore journey through the 13th to the 18th century by discovering the artistic innovations specific to each period and its relation to the previous one.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- know major Spanish artwork that can be found in London
- have a better knowledge and understanding of how Spanish art evolved during each of the periods studied in class
- understand how each period contributed to the evolution of European art in general
- distinguish painting and sculpting styles and appreciate different artisitic representations.
- use new specific vocabulary to exchange and discuss art in Spanish
- speak Spanish with better confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Advanced knowledge of Spanish is essential: you should have done a minimum of 5 years of Spanish recently. It is not necessary to have any prior knowledge of Spanish or South American art. It is also open to native speakers of Spanish.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at https://www.citylit.ac.uk/self-assess-your-level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course is based on the tutor’s own resources.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Anna Riera Mora

I have lived abroad for more years than in my home town Barcelona, because I have always enjoyed travelling and getting to know different cultures. I currently teach Spanish and Catalan, my mother tongues, to adults and university students. I also speak Italian, English and some French. My pending subject is to learn Arabic. However, my passion is art history, especially 19th century sculpture. I have also worked as an exhibition curator in some Catalan museums. So, if I'm not in class, you'll find me in a museum or exhibition. In this sense, London is a jewel. For all these reasons, I love to prepare courses in which I can combine my interest in teaching languages with my interest in art history.
