This course aims to enable students to improve their fluency and comprehension through discussions on a wide variety of topics and to expand their vocabulary and knowledge of grammar.
What will we cover?
The course will follow news in the Spanish media. There will be debates, role-play and discussions on topics of special interest to the students (cultural, social and political). Practice of appropriate grammatical structures. There will be an equal share of audio-visual and reading materials.

- Acquire knowledge of current affairs in Spanish and Latin-American - Develop modern vocabulary, idioms and grammar through newspaper articles - Explore modern literacy texts - Develop comprehension of oral and aural skills.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should either have studied Spanish for 4/5 years or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. They should also have a good grasp of grammatical structures and be reasonably fluent.

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. Dr. Óscar Salgado-Suárez teaches Spanish language and cultural courses at Birkbeck, University of London; Imperial College and City Lit. His cultural research interests are 20th and 21st Century Spanish and Latin American visual and literary representations with a focus on storytelling, affects and humour studies in relation to historiography, national identities and power formations.
