This short course offers you a chance to experience the Spanish language and the culture of Spain and Latin America in a relaxed and supportive setting. You will watch a film in Spanish and take part in a beginner-level language session with others who are also new to Spanish, providing you with a fun preview of what it’s like to learn a new language in a group setting.
What will we cover?
We will be watching El laberinto del fauno (Guillermo del Toro / 2006), a Spanish dark fantasy film that takes place in 1944 and tells the story of Ofelia, a little girl whose mother is about to marry a Francoist captain and who during that time interacts alternatively with the real world and the mythical world. After the film you will take part in a Spanish Taster for beginners covering greetings, personal information, ordering food and drinks, Spanish-speaking culture.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The film will be shown with English subtitles and introduced in English by one of our Spanish tutors.
The taster class is for complete beginners, so no previous knowledge of Spanish is required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The film will be introduced by one of our Spanish tutors who will provide some cultural background as well as highlight any relevant aspects of the film.
The language taster class will focus on interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. No preparation is required.
