What is the course about?

This short course offers you a chance to experience the Spanish language and the culture of Spain and Latin America in a relaxed and supportive setting. You will watch a film in Spanish and take part in an intermediate-level language session with others who are also keen to learn more Spanish, providing you with a fun preview of what it’s like to learn Spanish in a group setting at City Lit.

What will we cover?

We will be watching El laberinto del fauno (Guillermo del Toro / 2006), a Spanish dark fantasy film that takes place in 1944 and tells the story of Ofelia, a little girl whose mother is about to marry a Francoist captain and who during that time interacts alternatively with the real world and the mythical world. Watch the trailer here.

After the film you will take part in a Spanish Taster for intermediate students covering greetings, personal information, and activities on Spanish-speaking culture.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Greet people
  • Talk about yourself
  • Gain an insight into the Spanish language and the culture of Spain and Latin America

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The film will be shown with English subtitles and introduced in English by one of our Spanish tutors.

The taster class is for intermediate students, so you should have learned Spanish for about 3 years recently.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The film will be introduced by one of our Spanish tutors who will provide some cultural background as well as highlight any relevant aspects of the film.

The language taster class will focus on interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. No preparation is required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
