This course explores the cultural diversity in Spain and Latin America, distinguishing and contrasting the differences in pronunciation in the different Spanish-speaking regions of the world: Northern vs Southern Spain; Spain vs Latin America. All of this explored through songs.
What will we cover?
We will learn or improve our pronunciation of tricky Spanish sounds (e.g. vowel sounds, the “r”) and other phonological features such as intonation letters phrase flow, using famous or not so famous songs from different Spanish-speaking countries. There will be plenty of oral pronunciation practice, but no pressure to sing!
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- pronounce Spanish sounds and words more accurately - be more intelligible and gain confidence when speaking or singing in Spanish - recognise spoken or sung words in Spanish more easily There may be other outcomes depending on the needs and interests of the group.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
A basic knowledge of Spanish is recommended as this makes it easier to remember examples, however anyone interested in the sound of Spanish can take part.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Unlike our usual Spanish language courses, instructions and explanations will be given in English and the translation of the songs will be provided if necessary, however there will be ample pair and small group pronunciation practice and opportunities to sing whole songs (although there will be no pressure to do so).
This course uses Google Classroom, a digital learning platform where all the teaching and learning resources can be found. Here are some common answers to questions about Google Classroom.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No, the course is based on the tutor’s own resources.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
This will depend on your level of Spanish. We offer other short courses on Spanish or Latin American music with a different focus (e.g. improving grammar, cultural knowledge, vocabulary). Please contact languages@citylit.ac.uk for advice.
