Computing for Deaf People

City Lit offer computing classes at different levels for deaf people, from beginners to European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) level 2. Our tutors will help you find the right course to meet your needs. Classes are taught in BSL.

For deaf computing courses you will need to come to an initial assessment session to make sure you find the right class. Please contact us by SMS text on 07642818557 or email deafskills@citylit.ac.uk to make an appointment.

In order to join our deaf computing courses, you need to have an interview and initial assessment first.

We offer a range of courses allowing you to choose between online and in-person learning. All our courses are live, interactive, and taught by expert tutors.   1. Digital skills for deaf people: improve your English vocabulary via research, presentation and video editing (Entry 3 - Level 2)

    The focus of the course is to develop learners’ vocabulary pertaining to differnet topics (money/finance, the body, transport, employment etc) and also looks at phrasal verbs, idioms and fixed expressions. As part of all that, the course simultaneosuly sets out to develop learners’ digital skills as part of the bigger picture behind the topic focus. This course has no exams.

  2. Basic DS skills for deaf people: getting started with online learning (pre-entry) - part 3
    Course start date:  Mon 17 Apr 2023

    This complete course for beginners will help to become a confident user of your computer from setting it up to understanding and using basic digital skills functions.

  3. Digital skills and Maths for deaf people: shopping and spending (pre-entry to Entry 1)
    Course start date:  Mon 17 Apr 2023

    Location on this date:  Keeley Street

    During the course you will develop skills in learning independently, communicating with your tutor and other students. You will develop your ability to use your own initiative, carry out research and complete tasks either independently or in collaboration with others.



    The course is practical and the skills you learn can be used in everyday life situations. There are no exams to this course.



    Free course: This is a Multiply course. Multiply is a new government programme to help adults improve their numeracy skills. This course is free for Londoners aged 19 or over if you don’t have a GCSE in maths at grade 4/C or equivalent.

  4. Digital skills for deaf people: improve your English by researching life stories of famous people and sharing their stories in BSL (Entry 3 - Level 2)
    Evening
    Course start date:  Thu 4 May 2023

    Location on this date:  Keeley Street

    You will learn different research strategies, understanding where to look for information. You will learn how to skim and scan different texts to find the details you need. You will make notes identifying the source of your information and then finalise scripts to help you to deliver the presentation. You will be able to give a well-structured presentation with an introduction and conclusion, and use features of BSL such as: timelines, placements, referencing and enumeration. You will also learn BSL presentation skills such as how to introduce your topic, share the main points of information and summarise what you have covered.

  5. Digital skills for deaf people: have an effective interview via video call (entry 2 - Level 1)

    Location on this date:  Keeley Street

    Learn how to set up a web camera or use your mobile phone camera to make a video call through Skype, Google Hangouts, Facetime or Zoom, and then learn how to prepare for an effective interview.
