What is the course about?
This course is for both beginners and the more experienced student, aiming to help students overcome what can be the intimidating process of tackling drawing portraits. The course starts with a series of simple drawing exercises which become progressively more challenging.
What will we cover?
As well as looking at the technical aspects of drawing i.e. how to measure, how to see and understand tonal difference, how to get a likeness, students will also explore the expressive possibilities within drawing the portrait.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Draw a head which looks three dimensional
• Draw features of the face
• Try to capture likeness and expression
• Explore expressive marks.
• Use simple strategies for using colour in portraits with chalk pastels.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Beginners to intermediate level students welcome.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is structured and students will be shown practical demonstrations, examples of artist’s work, one to one tuition and group discussions.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All drawing materials are provided.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
After this course you will be able to join any of the City Lit portrait painting or drawing classes as well as the life classes such as Portraits 1 and Life Drawing.
