This is a brief introduction to oil painting techniques and the use of materials. Explore a practical approach to oil painting, from priming surfaces through to colour mixing, glazing and the function of painting mediums.

Description

What is the course about?

An introduction to the basics of oil painting. Learn about laying out a palette, different mediums and supports and a range of paint handling techniques such as impasto and glazing.

What will we cover?

The course will show you how to organise a palette and introduce you to basic colour mixing.
We will cover the process of building a painting in layers and developing and moderating colour with oil mediums, when painting from observation. It will relate painting techniques to the work of artists.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Lay out a palette
- Mix colours using basic colour theory
- Investigate application techniques such as glazing and scumbling.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners and for those who want to learn to use oil paint from scratch. Some drawing experience is always helpful but not essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical work, individual and group tutoring, group discussion, demonstrations, artists’ images and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring:
- a palette knife
- rags or kitchen roll
- old clothes

Oil paint, and paper and brushes for the course are provided.
