What is the course about?

You will learn how to use a commercial photography workflow safely and build your confidence. The course will cover an introduction to studio and location practice and lighting. You will also learn about digital workflow including shooting tethered (camera connected directly to a computer) saving and backing up files and creating client ready files for web and print.

What will we cover?

- Commercial practice
- Studio and location lighting
- Image colour management
- Professional photography digital workflow from image capture through file delivery to image storage.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Setup and dismantle studio lighting
- Describe a range of lighting modifiers and their purpose
- Take an accurate flash meter exposure reading
- Create and select a custom white balance
- Photograph using tethered image capture
- Output images for web and print in a professional workflow.
- Back up files for long term storage.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners course in commercial photographic practice. It is not a beginners course in photography. There is an expectation that you are familiar with the manual controls of your camera and have basic computer skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught with short talks, demonstrations, handouts and hands on group practice in our dedicated photography studio and in the local environment (weather permitting). One to one support will be provided where needed. The course also uses Google Classroom (an online teaching resource) for you to share comments with your class, download course material and upload images for group crits.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to bring your own camera. During the hours of the class you will be provided with all equipment, high end Canon, Fuji, Sony and Nikon cameras and lenses, tripods, Profoto lighting, light meters, tethering cables and Apple laptops complete with Adobe creative cloud (Photoshop and Lightroom) and Capture One software.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The City Lit has a vast range of photography, video, animation and image software courses. Please browse the web site for inspiration.
