What is the course about?

In this one-day course we will study the development of Romanticism in different countries and the artists involved, within the context of academic traditions and changing stylistic concerns, before turning our attention to Goya’s art. Through analysis of his famous works we will chart the progress of his painting and printmaking and his relationship with the artistic establishment.

What will we cover?

  • The development of Romanticism
  • Focus on artistic context, social change and the influence of Edmund Burke.
  • Goya’s art, focusing on style, content, his response to the changing world and his relationship with academic tradition.

• Discuss the evolution of the Romantic style and identify its characteristics

• Describe how Romantic interests develop in Goya’s art

• Assess the significance of Goya’s work in relation to artistic tradition and development.

Rachel Sanders

Dr Rachel Sanders received her MA and PhD in History of Art from University College, London. She has taught at a number of institutions and currently lectures on the history of art and design at City Lit and Oxford Brookes University. Her research interest is early twentieth-century American political paintings and cartoons. She has published a number of articles on her research specialism and is currently writing a book on New Masses magazine.
