What is the course about?

This one-day course will study one of the most important European modernist art and design movements: the Bauhaus. We will introduce some of the significant artists related to this influential school that emerged as a response to the devastation of WW1.

We will chart the aims the group through the study of iconic works such as Mies van der Rhoe’s Barcelona Pavilion and Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair and also consider the Bauhaus’s contribution to the international design aesthetic that dominated the mid-twentieth century.

What will we cover?

• Artists associated with the Bauhaus including Vasiliy Kandinsky, Marcel Breuer and Anni Albers (please note: we do not have time to discuss their biographies in-depth, instead we’ll think of them as part of the broader movement).

• Materials, visual characteristics, and design principles, such as standardisation and longevity

• Design practices including furniture and graphic design.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
