What will we cover?

On this lively and communicative-focussed course you will continue to develop your Swedish speaking skills.

We will discuss topics such as:

  • Brott och Straff

  • Arbetsplatsen

  • Kulturchocker och Näthat

  • Svenska Högtider

Focus will be on helping students to express and talk about their own interests and opinions. Sources are contemporary and will include videos, news reports, blogs, works of literature and texts from a workbook.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- speak about Swedish traditions, outdoor culture and history in Swedish
- discuss news items and articles
- confidently navigate situations in which you don't understand without switching to English
- start to recognise the difference between careful/citation speech and casual/connected speech

You'll also have used the following points of grammar in context-situated conversations:

- Use time prepositions accurately when talking about events (en gång i månaden, två gånger om året).
- Use conjunctions (antingen…eller, inte..utan) when discussing and expressing opinions.
- Use reflexive verbs (tvätta sig, skilja sig) and pronouns (sig) confidently.
- Use correct word order in longer sentences (bisats + Huvudsats).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For continuing students: This is the continuation of our Swedish 3 upper: module 2 course.

For new students: You are welcome to join this class even if you have not previously studied with City Lit. You should have actively studied Swedish for 3 years recently and be should be able to hold a conversation about everyday situations to an intermediate standard, read everyday instructions in simple, everyday Swedish. You should also have a good knowledge of the present, simple past and future tenses (SKA and KOMMER ATT). If you need further advice or guidance to help you decide if this course is the right level for you, please email us at languages@citylit.ac.uk

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun, subject and object.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
