In this fun, 1-day workshop you will be taught how to print onto t-shirts, tote bags and other fabrics. Students will learn basic screenprinting techniques, including how to put your own designs onto screens, correct inks and printing methods and how to clean and prepare screens.

What is the course about?

You will be guided through the complete process of achieving a 1 colour screenprint on a t-shirt. You will explore using hand drawn designs or how to use photographic images. These can be processed onto a screen and printed in a selection of colours. You will learn the main differences between printing on paper and textiles and be shown the best place to source materials from.

What will we cover?

- DIY printing and how to print at home
- How to make a screen that will print perfect every time
- Mixing inks and learning how to cure them
- Exploring printing techniques
- Using hand drawn marks and photographic images

- Some basic Photoshop skills.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Clean and degrease a screen for printing
- Coat and prepare a screen for printing
- Making hand drawn or photographic acetates that are suitable for printing
-Textile printing techniques
- Ideas on DIY printing and how to screenprint at home.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All welcome, no previous skills required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, examples, practical work, working individually and in small groups, individual tutoring and group
discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

White T-shirts will be provided, however if you wish to print on other coloured t-shirts or tote bags, feel free to bring them with you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to follow on to one of our screen printing courses - this course serves as an excellent introduction. You can find these on the citylit website. Your tutor can also advise.

Adam Hogarth Tutor Website

Adam Hogarth is an artist based in London. Adam completed a BA Hons in Fine Art at Northumbria University and an MFA in Fine Art Printmaking at The Royal College of Art, from 20016-2020 he has been the Printmaking Fellow at The Royal Academy of Arts. After graduating from his MFA Adam worked for Advanced Graphics London, a fine art print publishers, specialising in screenprint and woodblock printing. In the three years working there he produced prints for some of the leading artists and galleries in the UK. He is currently the head screenprinter at Thames-Side Print Studio. Adam's practice is multi-diciplinary, although his strengths lie in print. His work tackles notions of Auto-Destruction, an arts movement that gained notoriety in the 50's and 60's by the artist Gustav Metzger. Adam has exhibited nationally and internationally, including: Tate Britain, The Royal Academy of Arts, ICA, DAnielle Arnaud Gallery, The Finland Print Triennale and Kobe Sans University (Japan). At City Lit Adam teaches screenprinting where his classes accomodate a variety of students from beginner to advanced.
