  9. Science guest lecture by Dr Richard Knight: Micropaleontology - the world of microscopic fossils: their importance, beauty and use

Science guest lecture by Dr Richard Knight: Micropaleontology - the world of microscopic fossils: their importance, beauty and use

Course Date: Fri 10 May 2019
Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
Micropaleontology is the discipline within paleontology dealing with the study of microscopic fossils, the most abundant of all fossil types. Dr Richard Knight offers a fascinating introduction to this complex but rarely publicised part of geology.

The lecture will define the scope of the subject, and explore its unique scientific and aesthetic attractions. The fossil record beyond the naked eye is full of stunningly beautiful relic life forms, some readily recognisable and traceable to modern fauna and flora. Others remain strangely mysterious, their true nature and function still topics of conjecture and speculation. Hand in hand with advancements in microscope technology (from incident light to Scanning Electron Microscopy), the microscopic fossil record has slowly revealed itself. Selective microfossil types from a diversity of environments and geological time periods will be illustrated. The lecture will explain their occurrence in the geological record, their affiliation or (perceived) function, and significance to a wide range of academic and commercial geological studies. Examples of the role microfossils play in paleogeographic reconstructions (understanding where ancient continents and seas once existed), as well as tracing land plants back some 445 million years into the Late Ordovician-Silurian will be discussed. Also, find out what the White Cliffs of Dover are essentially made of !

Dr Richard Knight is a professional geologist with over 28 years' experience in the energy sector. He has a PhD in Micropaleontology and he has lived and worked across the world including the Sultanate of Oman, Malaysia, Australia, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, and closer to home in Europe.
