What is the course about?

This course is designed to spark your creativity in textiles and surface pattern through hands-on drawing and media experimentation. Whether you’re a beginner who feels nervous about drawing or a more experienced artist, this course offers a welcoming space for you to develop your skills. Through playful and enriching experiments, you’ll discover how drawing can invigorate your design work. For those already confident in drawing, this course invites you to explore new techniques and expand your creative perspective. Emphasizing the importance of imaginative research, you’ll build explorative sketchbooks and delve into dynamic ways of capturing ideas, ensuring that each stage of your process contributes to innovative design.

What will we cover?

This course offers an in-depth exploration of colour and abstract design principles, with a focus on textiles and surface pattern applications. You will develop a body of experimental drawings through studies of texture, line, mark-making, printmaking, scale, layering, and surface techniques, using mixed media. Working with a collection of personal objects/images and still life sources, you will draw inspiration to infuse your designs with unique, meaningful elements. We will begin in black and white to establish a foundation, before gradually introducing colour as your designs develop.
Throughout the course, we’ll emphasize the importance of sketchbooks as creative tools for gathering imaginative research and refining your design process. Beginners will receive guidance on starting and maintaining a sketchbook practice, while experienced sketchbook users will have opportunities to share and expand their methods.
With a foundation in mark-making and printmaking, you'll experiment with layering and composition, transforming your drawings and sketchbook entries into design concepts. Using photocopying, collage techniques, and print processes, you’ll explore placement, layout, scale, repetition, and motif creation. Encouraged to follow a personal design direction, you’ll find that the design process often leads to surprising and exciting results, providing a solid grounding in textile and surface pattern design.
