On this course, you will produce two experimental textile samples inspired by traditional Japanese embroidered mending techniques.You will be introduced to Sashiko embroidery, learning how to use running stitch to create geometric patterns on a plain cotton fabric.Then with Boro embroidery, you will learn how to repurpose scraps of fabric to make a new quilted piece.

• Recognise characteristics of traditional Japanese embroidery. • Understand how to do Sashiko embroidery. • Understand how to do Boro quilting/embroidery. • Feel confident to deconstruct and reconstruct fabrics. • Complete two Japanese inspired textile samples.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for beginners or professionals who want to broaden their textile skills. Stitching and quilting methods will be taught at an introductory level with an emphasis on providing a basis for taking ideas/techniques learnt forward. Group discussion and one- to- one support will be provided.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course will be taught online using Zoom the sessions will feature group discussion and critique, demonstrations, and one-to-one tutorials.
As an online course, you will require access to: • A reliable internet connection • A computer/laptop/ with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and ideally, a camera • Using headphones with microphones will block out all room noise in sessions. • You will require a good broadband connection as mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle will not provide sufficient bandwidth during live sessions.
This course is supported by Google Classroom, as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations, and handouts. You will be asked to complete learner progress records. You can find help via the student help centre on the City Lit website. Please note it is important that you sign up and log in to your course Google classroom prior to the first session. Joining details will be sent to you via email (check your junk/spam folder).

You will also need the following materials for the first session. • Sashiko needles or regular embroidery needles. • Pins. • Sashiko thread. • Stranded embroidery cotton. • Small pair of embroidery scissors. • Medium weight plain, woven cotton fabric (no stretch). • Scraps of repurposed fabric. • Carbon paper. • A biro pen. • A ruler or tape measure.
