What is the course about?

This course will help you in situations where you need to negotiate, from huge procurement contracts to what’s for dinner. A firm understanding of the skills and techniques which underpin great negotiation valuable to novices starting out and those looking to formalise their experience alike. As you develop through the course there will be frequent low pressure opportunities to practise in negotiations with your classmates.

Methods for planning and preparing
Strategies to approach win:win outcomes where possible
Emotional and psychological aspects of negotiation
Effective communication skills; speaking and listening persuasively
Overcoming natural reluctance to negotiate and building confidence.

Listen carefully and speak persuasively
Use the correct approach for a given situation
Frame issues to your advantage
Calmly and confidently carry out negotiations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will comprise talks, discussions, and exercises practising specific skills and techniques and role-played scenarious to practise negotiation. Students will receive feedback from the tutor and from their peers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A notepad and pen will be useful.

Gavin Illsley

Gavin Illsley has taught Debating, Art of Negotiation, Public Speaking and Presenting at City Lit since 2011. While at the High School of Dundee in 2003, he won the Cambridge Union Debating prize, and he was a champion debater at the Cambridge Union and European championships. Since graduation he has served as a judge of debating competitions, notably for the Oxford Union, European Debating Championships. Gavin is also Head of Programmes at the English Speaking Union.
